Okra Milk Is Delicious

I eat Ital a lot. Ital is a rasta term which just means natural food — from the earth, no extras, no meat, etc. It suppose it can really be anything but in this case it’s usually rice and chunks (soy bits) with peas etc. It’s become a staple of my diet at lunchtime because it’s fairly inexpensive (EC$5) and its tasty in a way that makes it hard to get tired of. Anyways I get it from a rasta just down the road that has a street stand. His name may or may not be ‘Captain Barke’ as the stand is painted, but calling him brother or rasta usually works. Until this past Tuesday I had never had his juice that he sells, but I decided to be a little adventurous. He had mauby and some sort milk. I had no idea what he said for the second choice other than the term milk when he told me but I’m really not too keen on the mauby so I went for it and got the mystery milk.

I later asked a Marion House student who had gotten it as well what it was.  Okra milk he says.  Well, I have to say that it was actually delicious!  You might be wondering if it’s the same okra we eat in the south fried and such — I’ll let you know that it in fact is. To make the milk you boil the okra and drain the liquid, then add sugar and condensed milk and chill it. Pretty simple and pretty damn good. Okra is also claimed here to help your virility, so I guess that’s another plus.

Hey guys, I can’t wait to try the Ital from Captain Barke’s rasta stand. I’m not sure about the okra milk, but with granola it might be OK. It does sound interesting. I may need to bring Tums just in case. love, Mom
